One of the great things about moving back to NYC is the abundance of workouts, yoga classes, gyms, and fitness events available. I’ve taken a few classes at Om Yoga, Jivamukti and Bikram Yoga (almost all of their NYC locations) and they’ve all been great and inspiring. This past summer I found out about Patricia Moreno’s IntenSati classes – incidentally, from a mom on the playground who liked one of the Tees for Change baby tees my son was wearing.

According to Patricia’s website, IntenSati is a “revolutionary workout fusing high-energy aerobics, martial arts, dance, yoga, and strength conditioning. Combining spoken affirmations with simple choreography, intenSati provides a heart-pumping, exhilarating workout that builds physical, mental, and spiritual muscle. It is fitness at the highest efficiency and empowerment physically challenging and spiritually mindful.” I took my first intenSati class over the summer and it was amazing! I left the class feeling inspired and ready to take on anything. I haven’t taken any intenSati classes since that summer (you have to be a member of Equinox Fitness to take them), so when I found out about the intenSati Warrior Challenge, I decided to sign up.

The Warrior Challenge is a 30 day challenge – you have to take an intenSati class three times a week for a month AND  you get a gree membership to Equinox. I applied for one of 50 spots and got in!!!! I started the challenge this past Sunday and today I went to my third class this week  -yogaSati. It was a great workout, for both body and mind.

For those of you who are not in NYC, you can get a copy of the intenSati DVD at Amazon. I highly recommend it and I’ll keep you all posted as my 30-day challenge progresses.

And if you’re in NYC and want to sign up for the next 30 day Warrior Challenge, check back at the intenSati website for more info.

It’s become a routine with me, and I’m guessing millions of others, that every New Year, I reassess how I’m spending my time and if I’m “getting the most out of each day” — in quotes since the definition of that phrase is different for each of us.

It could be the most productive work towards a certain goal, it could be spending quality time with friends and family, it could be self-care or, more commonly, a combination of all and more.

As the demands on our time continually increase, it’s time to make a stand for what’s important in our lives.

We’re always talking about “getting more done” or “getting things done” when what’s really important is “getting the RIGHT things done” at any given time.

So how do you know if something is “the right” thing to be doing?

Ask this one question of each task/project before you start it:

“Does it bring me closer to my goal of X?”

If the answer is “yes”, do it.

If the answer is “no”, delegate or ditch it.

Now that you know whether a task is worth your attention, it’s time to actually get it done.

In order to get it done, you must be fully present — that is, focused — on whatever it is you’re doing any any given time.

With smartphones, email, Twitter and Facebook, not to mention all the distractions inherent in working from home, it’s easier than ever before to get distracted.

I recently read a quote from Esther Dyson (a commentator on cyber businesses) who stated “I worry about something I call Mental Diabetes Type 2, a lack of ability to think in a concentrated fashion over a period of time.”

WOW! That’s a pretty strong statement and one that bears some attention not only from a “self” perspective and ensuring you stay focused, but also from a “client” perspective and keeping them engaged amidst a world of distractions (more on that next week).

My Request to You

What are you doing to ensure you stay focused and “on target” with your goals?

And by “doing”, I mean what steps are you ACTIVELY taking to ensure that the latest, greatest bright shiny object or other distraction doesn’t take you off course?

Here are a few things I do to keep on track:

* Schedule everything and if I originally think it will take an hour to do, I give myself 45 minutes — I find that if things aren’t scheduled, one task can take the entire day.  Scheduling also forces me to be realistic about my daily Action List.
* Use my timer to complete tasks in pre-defined periods of time — if you’ve been reading me for a while or are a client, you know how much I adore the Polder digital timers.
* Chunk things together. Have calls to make? Blog posts to write? Group similar tasks together so that your brain is already “in that mode”.
* And, most importantly of all, continuously ask myself “Does this bring me closer to my goal of X?” before saying “yes” to something or getting started on a new project.

I challenge you to try scheduling your day AND sticking to the schedule — even if you don’t finish everything, I guarantee you’ll get a lot more done than you otherwise would have. :-)

HOLIDAY GIFTS THAT GIVE BACK – SUPPORT THE ECONOMY WITH INSPIRING GIFTS FROM WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS

New York, NY, December 10, 2009 – According to the National Foundation for Women Business Owners, women entrepreneurs contribute more than $3.6 trillion to the marketplace each year. These rapidly growing statistics show concrete evidence that women business owners stimulate our economy and create new job opportunities. Savor the Success, a boutique social network and PR cooperative for women entrepreneurs, provides an easy way to support this movement with its second annual Holiday Catalog. Representing the best in beauty, baubles, baby gear and more, gift givers can find something for everyone on their list and support the economy.

Crafted in a “five questions for” interview format, each catalog page provides insight into the person behind the product. The catalog merchants share what inspires them, how they give back to the community, their quirks and favorite indulgences.

After receiving hundreds of submissions, the entrants were narrowed to just 50 participants that represent the best in holiday gifts for 2009 including:

Gifts that Help You Succeed

How many times have you heard ‘I’d love to start <insert> business, but don’t have the money for start-up costs?’ Contributing to the recipient’s success is truly a gift that keeps on giving.

Gifts that Promote Relaxation

Help everyone on your list unwind after a stressful season of shopping, planning and partying. Your family and friends will enter the New Year with a renewed sense of purpose and a calm spirit.

Eco-Friendly Gift Ideas

Give back to entrepreneurs and the environment with items made of recycled, reused and natural materials.

Top Destination Gift Ideas

After a hectic year, there’s no better gift than a getaway. Whether heading to a spa or experiencing culture, gift your family and friends with a lovely getaway – and maybe even join in on the fun.

Luxe for Less Holiday Gifts

Gold and diamonds may not fit the budget this year, but there are plenty of gifts that feel just as luxurious without the hefty price tag.

Gifts that Give Back

Entrepreneurs have a passion for business and for giving back. Philanthropic gifting is giving with purpose.

“We believe this incredible collaboration of top women entrepreneurs provides an amazing array of holiday gifts that any recipient will savor,” said Savor the Success co-founder Angela Jia Kim.

Conquering Your Fears

December 6, 2009

By Laurie Gerber, President, Handel Group Private Coaching

Lately it seems there has been a lot more fear circulating out there. Here at Handel Group Life Coaching, we have been getting lots of questions from clients regarding their anxieties about the economy, concerns about finding new jobs, obstacles to finding love, trouble getting the bodies they want and many other questions revolving around fear and how to handle it.

What do the Handel Group life coaches have to say about your fears? I will tell you.

You’ve probably got fear all wrong. You probably think fear means something is awry and that fear is to be avoided. However, if you think about it, fear means there is a challenge before you and that you WANT something.

If you look closely, you will find that the moments of your greatest pride came directly after overcoming fear. Achievement and pride are results of working through fear, not dismissing or avoiding it. Life is about building your courage and stamina; without challenges you would have no opportunity to do this.

Here are some concrete steps you can take to help you overcome the fear (omit comma) and get yourself motivated.

  1. Make a list of all your greatest accomplishments in life so far. Was there fear involved? Probably. Yet you overcame it. Be inspired by this, be inspired by you.
  2. Write out a vision for your future. Make sure it inspires you and gives you goose-bumps! Read it out loud every day.
  3. Make promises for certain actions each day, like: How many resumes will you send out today? Who is that new person you will talk to? What exercise will you perform?  Taking action every day is extremely important.
  4. If you are mentally stuck, get a life coach or some other form of help to sort through the limiting beliefs and theories that may be holding you back. They will also help to hold you accountable for staying in action.
  5. When fear comes up, go ahead and feel it, just long enough to acknowledge what a good sign it is. Then write the thoughts associated with the fear down into a journal or email them to a friend or your coach and then let them go. We call this a “purge.” Re-read your vision and get back to your promised actions.

Let us know how it goes and if you need help or have further questions about fear or any other life concern send us an email at coach@handelgroup.com. Check out our website for specialized services such as Weight loss coaching and Couples Coaching.
